Valor. Love. Virtue. Compassion. Splendor. Kindness. Wisdom. Beauty. Vigor.


Haunted by fears both vague and specific during the small hours of the night, the writer John Cheever took to reciting those nine words to himself upon arising, and found they cheered him. 
As long as you can keep those words in mind, I suspect, you are probably on ethically and emotionally solid footing — although Cheever might have done better to throw in the word “temperance,” too.
