The truth is, of course, that many of Fox News’ little used Tea Bags do not believe anything at all out of philosophical conviction. They can’t even spell “philosophical” or “conviction.” They claim to worship a Constitution they have not read, and do not understand.
No, they believe what they believe out of pure, blind tribal allegiance. They are determined to believe what they think Grandma believed, and Grandma didn't know anything more than they do.
They are fundamentalist Christians for the same reason and with virtually the same fervor that they are fans of a particular baseball team.
The truth doesn't particularly interest them, and often frightens them, because it may well contradict the comforting myths of their huddled, snarling tribe.
Their beliefs are a matter of a psychological need for conformity, and have nothing to do with the search for truth, except to the extent that they are opposed to it. Had the accident of birth dropped them into the Middle East, they would have been equally fanatic Muslims. They have met the enemy, and they are them.
