By Dan Hagen
Once, we were supposed to give up all our civil liberties to
fight the menace of communism.
When that "menace" collapsed under its own ossified
weight, America's ruling class had a moment of near-panic.
Now, we are supposed to give up all our civil liberties to
fight the menace of terrorism. Things are back to normal. America's ruling
class is sanguine again.
The point has never been the much-trumpeted, corporate-media-ballyhooed,
vague, largely phony menace, cut to fit the fashion of the year. The point has always
been getting rid of those civil liberties. Rulers find them immensely
irritating.
