At the beginning, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ hit all the
right beats, giving us that wisecracking, fast-action, devil-may-care Spidey we’ve
always wanted to see on screen and nice romantic comedy riffs with Peter and
Gwen. But by the middle, somehow, all the dark-secrets subplots and the two
belabored villain origins had turned the movie’s dramatic structure into a kind
of quivering gelatin. The actors were superior to the material — particularly Andrew
Garfield, Dane DeHaan, Emma Stone and Sally Field (who can stay naturalistic in
the silliest claptrap).
I had the most fun on the ride home with Matt Mattingly,
Jackson Mortka and Brad Kupiec when we all improvised a subtle-as-a-sledgehammer
inspirational speech by Aunt May. My stomach still hurts from laughing.
